Waterfront City, Docklands, Melbourne, Victoria

Introduction

Waterfront City will be Melbourne's new urban quarter and Melbourne Docklands' most impressive retail and entertainment hub.

Waterfront City is a $1 billion mixed use development located on 19 hectares of Melbourne Docklands that is only three minutes from Melbourne's CBD.

Melbourne Docklands will enjoy an estimated 20 million visitors per annum, be home to more than 20,000 people and a commercial work place for approximately 25,000 employees.

Location and Convenience

Waterfront City's location means it will be one of the most accessible shopping, dining and entertainment destinations in Victoria with 60 percent of Victorians (over 2 million people) within 40 minutes drive from the precinct. Not to mention the 2,000 on site car spaces and fast connections by public transport, including passenger ferries and water taxi.

Currently under construction, Waterfront City will be home to 200 retail outlets, flexible and innovative commercial office space, 850 homes, a selection of waterfront restaurants and Melbourne's newest entertainment precinct.

The precinct, designed to recreate the look and feel of Melbourne's stylish avenues and hidden lane ways, will also feature public spaces right at the water's edge, creating a sense of place for locals and visitors by its unique waterfront setting.

Waterfront City will deliver something Australia has never seen before, becoming a major tourist attraction and setting a benchmark for waterfront developments around the world. One component of the development that will ensure this is the case is Australia's first, and the world's second tallest, observation wheel known as the Southern Star.

The Southern Star

The Southern Star Observation Wheel will rise some 120 metres, giving 360 degree panoramic views of Melbourne and be on of the major drawcards for the 10-12 million people expected to visit Waterfront City.

Melbourne is renowned for its high-end supply of fashion retail. Waterfront City's retail offer will further build on this status via its outdoor strip-shopping style boutique outlets retailing local and international brand icons, complemented by a wide range of flagship stores.

In contrast, it will also introduce Melbourne to its very first Harbour Town Brand Direct Outlet, offering shoppers premium brands at prices up to 60 percent less than regular retail.

In late 1999, Harbour Town opened on the Gold Coast with expansion in 2003 via new centres in Perth and Adelaide. All three centres are major attractions in their respective states.

Clearly, an inner city Brand Direct Outlet will be a huge drawcard for shopaholics and bargain hunters alike. An opportunity not to be missed.

Construction of Waterfront City's First Phase, comprising the waterfront piazza, food and beverage, retail and commercial space is under way with a pre-Christmas 2005 opening planned.
